DRAMA

Students in grades seven and eight are invited to participate in the drama club.  Tryouts are held for specific parts, though any student may participate as a member of the backstage/crew.  Practices are held on the school property and are supervised by Mrs. Kinson.  The students prepare a performance for the school and compete in the Middle School Festival of the Massachusetts High School Drama Guild in late April or early May.

DRAMA CLUB EARNS GOLD AT ANNUAL COMPETITION!

On Saturday, May 3, the St. Pius V School Drama Club participated in the Middle School Drama Competition sponsored by the Massachusetts High School Drama Guild, Inc. at Ipswich High School.  The club earned a Gold Medal for their production of Jack vs. Jill, an adapted dramedy (drama/comedy) of the classic nursery rhyme where Jill sues Jack for damages suffered from tumbling down the hill.  Jack must defend himself against Jill’s accusations that he maliciously pushed her down the hill.  The ensuing trial provides the audience with a comical account of the events surrounding the story of Jack and Jill in an utterly chaotic courtroom.  At the end of the play, the audience acts as jury to decide whether Jack is innocent or guilty.

All-Star Company award certificates were presented for the following acting roles: the prosecuting attorney, the defense attorney, and the oblivious judge.  An All-Star Company award certificate was also presented to the costume manager.  The entire drama club was presented with the Stage Manager’s Award for courtesy, cooperation, and teamwork during the competition.  This year's performance was directed by Mrs. Megan Kinson, Mrs. Joanne Orluk, and Mr. Paul Maestranzi.  Michael Lepley, alumnus of St. Pius V School and current student of St. John’s Preparatory School, provided assistance as a student director.

PAST PERFORMANCES

During the 2006-2007 school year, the drama club put on a stunning performance of "The Bible in 30 Minutes...or Less!".  The performance takes the audience on a whirlwind journey through the many books and stories of the Bible.  The students were required to play multiple characters, memorize complex lines, and deliver a fast-paced comedic performance.  Congratulations to the 2006-2007 company for their Silver Medal Award at this year's Middle School Festival!  All-star company in acting awards were presented to Arianna D., Jack S. and Hailey S. for their outstanding performances.

During the 2005-2006 school year, the drama club presented a more serious performance of "Aftermath".  The performance takes place in a classroom and looks seriously at teenage social issues, such as gossip and the effects of mistreating one's classmates.  The 2005-2006 company received a Silver Medal Award at the Middle School Festival.

During the 2004-2005 school year, the drama club put on a bedazzling performance of "The Spell of Malatesta".  The performance focused on the exploits of Malatesta, a poor excuse for a witch who never scared the wits out of one person or created one evil potion.  Then one last effort produces, of all things, the most remarkable potion of all... a cure for the common cold.  However, Malatesta is unchanged.  She remains a bumbler, mixing the wrong potion and casting the wrong spell, and her customer suffers a startling transformation in the closing minutes of this hilarious spoof.  The 2004-2005 company received a Bronze Medal Award at the Middle School Festival.
